The air grows colder, and the holiday feels start to emerge. It’s December, which means one thing: it’s GOFA season. GOFA, which stands for Give One For All, is an annual fundraising event hosted by the staff of Mayo High School in support of the Women’s Shelter and the Dorothy Day House. Every year, students and staff work hard to raise money for these two institutions that have supported and cared for countless individuals and families.
The Dorothy Day Hospitality House, named after a caring individual named Dorothy Day, offers laundry facilities, coffee, and snacks from 4 p.m. – 9 a.m. daily. Dorothy Day was a journalist who believed in providing for the homeless. They are celebrating 38 years of service this year.
The Women’s Shelter has been serving individuals who have been impacted by domestic violence since 1976. They provide for nearly 4000 victims annually and have housed 400-500 individuals in our community. Mr. Thomas, the executive director of the organization, says that the GOFA money is a very impactful act. “Their efforts make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
Anticipated by many, the GOFA season is a very fun and exciting time. Sweets and treats are purchasable all around, and fun activities are everywhere. There are many different ways to get involved, such as the dress up days presented by the MHS school government or the game Paranoia.
Although GOFA is a competitive time for many, don’t forget what it’s truly about. It’s not about how much money you made, how many games you won, or the amount or treats you sold. It’s about helping others and helping to make Rochester a better place. Show Rochester the compassion we Spartans have this GOFA season for those who are struggling in our community.
