Are you a daring and adventurous Mayo High School student who is looking for an exciting opportunity exploring the wonders of nature during this spring season with awesome people? If that sounds like you, look no further; the Mayo High School Hiking Club welcomes you with open arms!
Hiking can be very beneficial to a person. According to the National Park Service’s website, “Hiking is one of the best ways to get exercise. No matter what type of trail you find yourself on, hiking is a great whole-body workout—from head to toe and everything in between.” Hiking can help you build stronger muscles and bones, improve your sense of balance, improve your heart health, and decrease the risk of certain respiratory problems.
Gavin Lyons, Mayo’s Hiking Club student leader, says Mayo’s Hiking Club is always looking for adventurous people who are “ready to have fun and open to anything.” He explained that the main purpose of the club is to “have fun and travel around, go on some adventures, and explore the area in a healthy way.” If a bunch of you join the group, you’ll “have fun with friends and get to know new people.”
Meetings take place every Monday in Ms. Vik’s room, 2-222. Lyons said that meetings consist of “going over future hikes, like the next hike coming up.” Besides that, they also hang out, getting to know each other and playing games.
There is no fee or required equipment to join. “The only thing you need to sign up for is filling out forms to go on hikes,” Lyons said, and joining is easy! “You can just pop into a meeting on Monday, then we can give you the Google Classroom code.”
Hiking club offers a great experience whether it’s at the meetings or on the trails with fun people whom you’ll have lots in common with. Lyons emphasized that they “accept anyone – if you are kind of afraid of joining and worried that you are not going to be able to – try it. Try it, and have fun!”
