Paranoia is the biggest, must-participate event for GOFA. It raises money through a fun game that will span several days of students chasing other Spartans, trying to track down their schedules, and stealthily waiting outside their classroom doors looking for an opportunity to pounce.
As fun and wild as it is, the game’s organizers have rules both for safety and to keep everything enjoyable.
- Participating students at Mayo are assigned the name of another student.
- They will attempt to hunt down their assigned student before being captured by a different person who is assigned their name.
- The way to tag someone is to touch them and say “paranoia.”
- Once a person is tagged, they are no longer in the game and have to hand over their card to the person who tagged them.
- The goal is to remain in the game as long as you can.
Additional rules include:
- While at school, participants are required to carry the card with their target person’s name on it for the duration of the game.
- A person can only be tagged in the hall.
- Classrooms, the lunch room, and library are all safe areas, so any tag in these locations is invalid – it won’t count.
- A player can only tag someone inside the school.
- Once a player tags someone and has retrieved their card, they must go to Mr. Terpstra in room 2-103 to turn in their previous target card (the card that has the name of the person they just caught). Remember, the player will have been given their target person’s card, so they will now be tracking down the person that their previous target had been after.
This activity will cost 5$ to register. Sign ups end December 4th, so make sure to join before then, by using this link.
The prizes are $75 for winning, which means you are the last one standing. There is also a $25 prize for the person with the most tags. If more than one person is left standing at the end of the game, then the person with the most tags wins $100 and the entire game.
Paranoia will begin December 10th at 8:45 am. Make sure to mess with your friends that are playing. The winner will be announced at the last GOFA pep fest.
Ask your social studies teachers about joining. If any problems happen during the game, go to Mr. Terpstra.
It is a coveted honor to win this competition, being the last one standing in the entire school, but it takes strategy, speed, awareness, and even a little paranoia. Are you up for it?
