For a wider selection of smoothie flavors, come visit the actual store located near Walmart South
Every Tuesday our lunchroom has a different flavor smoothie available. That’s all thanks to “BerryBlendz,” a smoothie shop located near Walmart South and Kohl’s. Students are given the chance to purchase smoothies for a discounted price of $4; however, most students don’t know the rotation of the flavors offered at school. Beyond that, the smoothies sell out fast, as it has become one of the school’s weekly highlights. Occasionally we even get them twice a week.
According to Amy Moen, one of our lovely lunch ladies, “we offer smoothies every Tuesday and sometimes Thursdays, and the flavors get rotated in order.”
There will be different flavors available throughout the school year, and with all these fruity choices to choose from, many Spartans have strong opinions about which one is the best.
To figure this out, The Advocate made a poll asking for your preference. The results are varying a lot, and as of this writing we have multiple ties. If you haven’t voted yet, after you finish this article, click the link and scroll to the bottom.
The standard smoothie cup is 16 ounces.
The most voted flavor so far is Razzleade (Lemon, Raspberry, and Strawberry) with 21% of the votes. Sometimes the simplest recipes give out the best results and that was shown here with this flavor. Following right behind it was Sunset Beach (Watermelon, Strawberry, Peaches and orange), which got 17% of the votes. Hawaiian Sunrise (Orange Juice, pineapple, peach and strawberry) came in at 3rd with 14% of the votes. Manager, Becky Monte of BerryBlendz reviewed the poll results of our students and expressed, “that makes sense, Razzleade and the Sunset one are always big hits with the kids nowadays, even outside of your school.” Hinting that there might be a change in the smoothie rotation, she went on to make a note that our students prefer those two flavors.
Other flavors like Caribbean Blend, Lime Your Mine, as well as Strawberry and Banana Craze all tied at 12%. Even though they are tied, these are all good options with a mix of classic and tropical fruits. Watermelon Wave ( Watermelon, raspberry, Strawberry and Banana) ended up with 9%, and sadly the least favorable ended up being Fruit Flirtation (Raspberry, Strawberry, Banana, and orange) with only 3% of the votes.
The smoothies listed are a way for students to gain nutritional value. It’s most crucial for teenagers to get the proper portions of food including fruit. Despite this fact, most of the students don’t actually consume the needed nutrients from fruits and vegetables, so what better way to include these nutrients than to have them in smoothies? For example, Razzleade sits at 250 calories per cup, 2g of fat, 1g of saturated fat, <5mg of Cholesterol, 30mg of sodium, 58mg of carbs, and 2gs of fiber. While the smoothie does provide an intake of fruits and natural sugars which provide vitamins like, Vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin B9. These generally come from the fruit within the smoothie and offer healthy vitamins that students might not consume enough of; however, it is important to note that there is some sugar added on to it, so while it does provide some nutritional value it shouldn’t be your primary source, but rather a nice treat.
Smoothies are starting to become a part of the Mayo experience, especially since we don’t always get exciting options like this in the cafeteria. Students can look forward to Tuesdays knowing there’s a new smoothie waiting to get devoured, so next Tuesday make sure to get your smoothie down at the cafeteria!
