At this point in the baseball season, there is a lot to look back at and even more to look forward to. The team has shown plenty of growth, and they pushed themselves day in and day out as the postseason approaches.
One thing that is going to lead this team to their goal is their pitching game. Whether it’s keeping games within reach or shutting down tough lineups, the pitchers have been a clear strength to this team. “We’ve trusted our guys on the mound all year,” Manager August Ridgeway stated. Even with this strong pitching core the team still has stuff they need to work on. One key area to improve on is the team’s approach at the plate. “The postseason is right around the corner. We have to be more disciplined when we are up to bat.” August Ridgeway said.
There have been many highlights for this team, but one that stands out to August Ridgeway is the doubleheader wins against the cross town rival Century. “The boys were locked in,” August Ridgeway said. In the second game they were very dominant, as the team secured a 10 run rule victory.
At Mayo Field, the team rushes home plate as Jack Ryan seals the game with a walk off home run.
Individually, Jack Ryan has been a key player at the plate. He’s launched 6 home runs on the season. Junior Gavin Werneburg is another person who has stepped up by being available for any position whether it’s pitching or being out in the field he is always ready.
At Mayo High School’s home field, the team storms Wyatt Anderson after a walk off home run.
Like any team, this group has faced many challenges, from weather delays, injuries, and tough matchups. The squad has still embraced these challenges, and rather than complaining and blaming others they continue to grind and get better everyday. Seniors like Michael Johnson, Jack Ryan, and Wyatt Anderson have helped this team stay on track. They have led the team on the field and in the weight room.
At Mankato East, Mayo gets ready to take the field.
The main goal for this team is to make it to state and win it all. This is a vision the team has had from the beginning of the season and they haven’t taken their eyes off it. To make this goal happen the team needs to contribute whether it’s a key at bat, a defensive play, or simply supporting each other through the grind of this long season. As long as the team can continue to build on its strengths and weaknesses there is no reason that this group can’t achieve their one goal in mind.
