Spring is here, and Mayo High School spring sports teams are continuing their excellent performances.
Mayo Boys Golf has a variety of talented players who are hoping to compete in the state tournament again this year.
Junior Will Gyamarty explained that the Mayo Boys Golf team had “a lot more depth last year.” This puts pressure on the upperclassmen to help their team out. The Post Bulletin highlighted 2024 seniors often saying, “In a notable performance last year, Mayo unseated Rochester Century to win the All-City Invitational, with five golfers scoring under 80. Sexton led the team with a 3-over-par 73, followed by Mikkel Norby (74) and Will Smith (76), showcasing the team’s depth and potential.” With the loss of last year’s seniors, the Spartan Golf Team has to develop the same kind of chemistry and bond. Luckily, the Mayo Boys have three outstanding players returning: senior Tim Sexton, junior Will Gyamarty, and senior Isaac Ahn, Harvard commit.

Senior Tim Sexton shares that the team “is definitely capable of going to state.” Mayo Boys Golf has been section champions two years in a row now, as well as Big 9 runner-ups. They have high standards to meet this year to follow their winning streak. To prepare for meets, Boys Golf typically “play 5-9-18 holes while younger guys work on the range with the coaches,” says Sexton. They also spend time at the range and chipping greens to perfect their aim. These meetings are typically held two to three times every week. Sexton, ranked No. 17 in the state, and Ahn, ranked No. 31, are leading the team so far, with the top scores. These two lead the team through their hardest competitors.

Mayo’s top competition this year is Northfield and Rochester Century, two schools with strong returning lineups and consistent depth. It will take commitment and hard work from every member of the team to overcome the competition. As the season progresses, the team hopes to refine its skills and develop its younger talent to create a stronger lineup for the postseason. With strong leadership, a dedicated work ethic, and a tradition of excellence, Mayo Boys Golf looks to make another memorable run this spring. Fans and families will be keeping a close eye on this talented group as they strive for another state appearance.
Will they make it three section titles in a row? Only time will tell, but the Spartans are swinging in the right direction.
