Señora Walters, a Spanish teacher at Mayo High School, was gone all of last year and a bit of the year before that; the reason why? a baby! She had a baby in April of 2023 and left for the rest of that school year and the next.
During her those months away, she spent her time with her new baby and another child who was about 2 years old at the time. Señora Walters enjoyed the time she had off and appreciated getting to “just be a mom” and not to have to try and balance working and being a mom right away. She really appreciates the profession she chose because not many people can just take a year off and just come back the next year.
Señora Walters became a teacher originally for many reasons but specifically a love of the Spanish language and culture. When she was taking Spanish classes herself, she was working at a grocery store and enjoyed helping customers who could only speak Spanish. She thought to herself, “just having a Spanish major isn’t very practical,” so she decided to use it. The things she thought of and enjoyed were playing School as a kid, working with kids, and just wanting to spread the Spanish language and culture to others. That’s when she realized that being a teacher would be a great job for her.
The reason for coming back to Mayo High School was mostly for the school’s community, her co-workers, and the great amount of school spirit that Mayo has. Senora Walters did contemplate staying home one more year, but decided to come back, and she is very happy she did. She is enjoying many things this school year such as working with her classes, being a part of the dances, participating in GOFA, and lots more.
Welcome back Señora Walters! Mayo high school appreciates having you as one of the lovely Spanish teachers here; we are glad to have you back!
