Mr. Mazur is a new social studies teacher at Mayo High School. He grew up in a suburb of the Twin Cities called Cottage Grove, and the teachers he had in school inspired him to become a teacher himself. He specifically wanted to be a social studies teacher around the time of the 2016 elections. He felt a calling to teach others about history and to help them understand the electoral process.
He went to Winona State University to get his teaching degree; then Mr. Mazur moved to Rochester to be a teacher at Willow Creek and John Adams. After gaining experience at those two schools, he chose to come to the great Mayo High School, having heard the fantastic things about Mayo. During that time, he considered his options: “Out of the three high schools, if I had to choose between the three, I’d still choose Mayo because I had heard a lot of positive things about the staff and the administration and the students.” Mazur explained that whenever he was on Mayo’s campus, “for different things in the district [he’d] always see students do cool stuff and thought that this would be a great environment to be in.”
Mr. Mazur said that moving to Rochester gave him a similar impression to when he moved from Cottage Grove to Winona. It’s a step up in size. He likes Rochester because “it very much has a city feel where there are so many diverse groups of people, so much diverse culture, so many diverse languages and food.” He also chose to move to Rochester because it’s between where his family lives and where Malia, his partner, lives.
When Mr. Mazur isn’t at work as a teacher, he plays video games, his most recent being Red Dead Redemption. He also likes to read; his most recent book was Dune. Aside from those interests, Mr. Mazur is in a graduate degree program at Minnesota State University at Moorhead. “In the morning I’m a teacher, and in the afternoon I’m a student,” Mazur said. He does hope to be involved in the school and community after sorting out grad school, because when Mr. Mazur was at Winona he was a part of the campus committee and set up entertainment events, so the students could have fun.
Mr. Mazur is a Mayo Spartan by day and a Moorhead Dragon by night.
For Mayo High School, Mr. Mazur hopes to help the community with GOFA and in other ventures. For himself, in his personal life, Mr. Mazur is looking forward to traveling somewhere outside of the US one day. It doesn’t matter where; he’s just up for an amazing time.
