The Mayo High School Orchestra has its holiday concert on Monday, December 2nd, at 7:00 pm in the Mayo High School auditorium. All the groups that perform will feature music these students have been working on for the past couple of months. There are musical pieces played by those with varying ability levels: beginners, intermediates, and advanced musicians. All of the Orchestra members are excited to play this music for their friends and family on the day we return from Thanksgiving break.
These concerts enable the students to show the “greatness” of classical music and more importantly to demonstrate the skills they have learned in class, while making Mrs. Kuisle and their parents proud. Those in the orchestra put in hours and hours of rigorous rehearsal, playing the same sections over and over again until they got each one right.
Going to these concerts is a great way to see how the beginners play the easier songs first, then the advanced, honors class plays the hardest, so it is worth staying till the end of the concert so you don’t miss a single note and enjoy great songs. Get there early, because each year, the performance is crowded. There are over 150 families who have come to see these Spartans perform.
The concert will feature a variety of festive songs, including Concerto for Triangle, Charlie Brown Christmas, Carol of the Bells, All I Want for Christmas Is You, and Fiddle Faddle, which showcases the top five violinists in the orchestra. Other pieces will be performed as well, so it isn’t all Christmas-themed. The auditorium will also be adorned with festive decorations in keeping with the holiday theme.
Also, if you miss out on this concert, don’t sweat it, because the orchestra has two more concerts after this one, in February and in May. The February performance features more complicated and challenging songs while giving opportunities for ensembles to play without the rest of their orchestra. The finale concert in May will involve mainly pop songs that are enjoyable to play compared to the February concert. During that last show, students are recognized for their accomplishments in the orchestra while giving a final farewell to the graduating seniors.
