At Mayo High School this Sunday, October 27th, Mayo Honor Society is hosting a Trunk or Treat from 12:30 to 3. The event will take place in the Mayo door six parking lot. Kids of all ages are welcome to show up, in a costume or just as themselves, and enjoy some candy.
Trunk or Treat refers to the tradition of having members of the Honor Society hand out candy to kids in the community from the trunks of their cars. It is like Trick or Treating except everyone meets in one location. The Honor Society members are required to dress up in fun costumes and decorate their trunks with a spooky, entertaining theme. They are even expected to buy their candy to hand out. These members get volunteer hours for participating in the event and dedicate 40 hours a year to volunteering. The dedication of the student’s time, energy, and money goes to show the amazing spirit that Mayo High School instills in its students.
Mrs. Giesen, the brand new advisor for Mayo Honor Society, is super excited about her first Trunk or Treat: “All of our members that are participating in Trunk or Treat will be at door 6 to hand out candy and just be supporting kids and families with a safe, close place to get candy and other Halloween goodies.” To help promote the event she states, “I contacted all of the elementary schools in Rochester as well as the RPS related day-cares, so we are hoping for a major event this year.”
The history of how Trunk or Treats started at Mayo is unknown to Giesen, but she said, “My assumption is that Kinneberg started the tradition back during the pandemic years to keep the Halloween spirit of enjoying candy and having fun kept alive but safe at a distance.”
Last year the Trunk or Treat event was a huge success. There were so many kids who came to the event that they ran out of candy before it was done! Honor Society members were dressed up in awesome costumes that ranged from animal onesies to real-life Spidermen. Giesen thinks this year’s costumes will be even better: “We have 30 trunks signed up. The football boys’ trunk is western theme which will include a Jeep in party mode playing music and line dancing. We have another group with the theme of food, so we will see what happens there.”
The event caterers to all humans in the community but has a special touch on the future Spartan generations. Kids get to interact with upperclassmen from Mayo and get a feel for what being a Spartan is all about. The involvement of future generations of Spartans in the community is what makes this event so special. Mrs. Giesen has a special surprise this year which will make this Trunk or Treat the best one yet: “I worked with Halloween Express South to put together 100 goodie bags to give out as well as a spooky piece of décor that will be a surprise to the kids attending the event but also the members of the honor society.”
