For the past few years, no team has embodied dominance in high school sports quite like the Mayo High School girls’ tennis team. With a relentless drive, unmatched talent, and a winning culture passed down through the times, they’ve not only dominated their conference, but also created a legacy in high school tennis. However, their frequent success raises a couple of questions. What is the secret behind this super-team, and can anyone stop them?

Without a doubt, their success stems from a culture of excellence, constant work, and commitment to winning. According to Mayo Girls Tennis head coach Jeff Demaray, out of twenty-seven years, the team has made it to state twenty-six times. This year’s team is no different, heading into the mid-season with a staggering 16-0 record, with a win over the projected number two seed team, Edina. 

“The success of this team is really attributed to the parents and the players. It wouldn’t be the same without the devotion of the parents, driving and paying for the players to have lessons and compete in tournaments. Not to mention the devotion of the players, the time and effort they put into this sport and this team,” head coach Jeff Demaray said. 

As an active member of this community, Coach Demaray also has an impressive history. As a former Mayo Spartan who played from 82’ to 85’, Jeff has since returned to coach both Boys and Girls tennis, taking them year after year to the state tournament. When asked about the team dynamic, many responded positively. 

“The girls get along really well. They’re always relaxed but have a competitive nature. They’re also always pushing each other to get better,” Assistant Coach Brett Pauley replied.

“They do a lot of team bonding outside of just practice and matches and have built a really tight team bond,” Stephanie Meunier said, a parent of former Team Captain Daniel Meunier, and current player Diane Meunier. 

The sovereignty of Mayo girls’ tennis team is undeniable and rooted in a family-like atmosphere of high energy and competitiveness. This bond, along with their insane level of dedication has been what’s brought this team to the top repeatedly and made them a force to be reckoned with on the court. Their unwavering support for one another and commitment to perfecting their game have been the key to maintaining their winning legacy as well as inspire future generations to do the same.
