Are you trick-or-treating or skipping out this year? Why not do it for a cause?

This year, the Mayo UNICEF club is hosting the first ever trick-or-treat campaign. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has been one of the biggest charity fundraisers for 68 years. Since 1950, the funds have helped save and improve children’s lives everywhere. For instance, 50 cents can provide one packet of ready-to-use therapeutic food to save a malnourished child. $5 can also provide one UNICEF backpack for a child to go to school. Winners who raise the most money earn free pizza from Pasquale’s Pizza or a free dessert of your choosing. To participate join a group of six people and help us reach our goal of $1,000. From now until Halloween, we ask everyone to go out and fundraise to support the UNICEF movement!

What is UNICEF?

UNICEF stands for the United Nations Children’s Funds. According to the organization’s own website, their work began after World War II, supplying children with nutritional supplements, dried milk, medicines, and other necessities. It was first created in 1946 to help children in war-torn China, Europe, and the Middle East. A year later, UNICEF USA was founded to support the mission of the survival, protection, and development of children through education, fundraising, and advocacy. Today, they work in more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children’s lives by providing them with sanitation services, access to clean and safe water, basic education, protection, and emergency relief, as well as immunizations and health care. With that being said, the UNICEF club program also exists to spread and grow a youth-led movement. Members believe they can play an important and vital role as the voice for children world-wide. These clubs including our Mayo club, partner up with UNICEF USA to help their community by advocating, fundraising and speaking out for UNICEF’s live-saving work for children.

The Mayo UNICEF Club

So far our school’s club has had two fundraising events: the outdoor movie that showed the Disney film Mulan and the selling of Pura Vida bracelets during the International Day of the Girl for girls’ education. Both fundraisers have been successful, raising over $1,650 for children everywhere! For this next event, please help be a part of the life-saving cause and talk to a UNICEF club leader or member about your interest raising money during the spooky season!
