It’s that time of the school year where everyone is excited and thrilled to participate in the Mayo High School fundraising for GOFA (Give One For All). There are many things to participate in, but you wouldn’t want to miss out on the GOFA Penny War!

Do you have any loose change you want to get rid of? The Penny War is a great place for it! Penny Wars is a competition between grade levels 9th through 12th. On top of Door 6 there are four containers labeled with each grade level. The rules are that anyone can put money in any grade’s container they want. However there’s a catch, only pennies count as positive points for that grade; each counts as 1 penny towards the grade level’s total, while dimes, nickels, quarters, and dollars will negate pennies. For example, if you put a dime in a container, it’ll subtract 10 pennies away from that grade’s container. Whichever grade has the most pennies by the end of GOFA will win bragging rights for the year.

There are many strategies to win the Penny Wars, such as having your classes make a goal and contributing towards it through adding to your class penny container. Also, at every GOFA pepfest there will be a Mayo Minute, from which the money earned will count towards the individual grades’ penny points. Penny Wars begin on December 4th and end on December 21st. You can put coins or dollars into the containers during any time of the school day. Penny Wars is a huge contribution towards the Mayo High School GOFA total goal of $40,000. It is also a simple and effective way to fundraise for GOFA. All proceeds earned will go towards the Dorothy Day House and the Women’s Shelter to help provide needs for individuals that are staying there.

Penny Wars allows everyone to participate, so don’t sit around and wait for the winning grade. Instead help participate for your grade to win Penny Wars! Look around your house for loose change: in the couch cushions, in the ditty drawer, but don’t steal from your little brother’s piggy bank!  Ask family members if they have any loose change. You can probably find some on the floor in your dad’s vehicle. Check under your bed, closet, couch, the holes in your jackets, and many more places! Just keep in mind that every penny counts.
