Thursday night, at their home stadium, Mayo girls soccer faced the Winona Winhawks. It was also senior night for the girls and the pressure was on the seniors to perform their best. Winona played very strong for the first half, holding Mayo to just one goal, scored by senior Kayley Josephs. The Spartan defense had one miscommunication that led to a Winhawk goal right after Mayo scored. At halftime, the score was tied 1-1. As the second half started, the Spartans took flight, led by a strong performance from their seniors. Over the next 39 minutes the Spartans scored two goals, resulting from the play of seniors Hannah Stelley, Kayley Josephs, and Anahi Alvarez. The defense held strong. They didn’t allow the Winhawks any opportunities to score as the clock ran out.

Finally, Mother Nature showed mercy for Winona with a lightning strike with 1:10 left on the clock, stopping the Spartans offense from scoring more goals. The final score of 7-1 ends the last home game for the 2017 seniors on a very high note.

The team now moves on to Lakeville South for a game on Saturday, October 8th. Thank you to all our lovely Mayo girls soccer players and good luck to them on their last game, moving them into sections.
