Netflix Review: Scream

Brogan Maxwell

Plain and simple Scream is dumb fun. It remains self-aware that the premise of having a deranged socio murderer harass teenagers is pretty absurd. The acting is downright horrible and is frustrating to the point in which it becomes laughable. Plus I mean, it is a MTV show, how fun would this be if it was serious? Scream is predictable (I guessed the ending once seeing the actor for the first time), the plot is absurd, and the acting could be featured in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. Yet, and it pains me to say this, the show is a guilty pleasure of mine and Scream the TV series is enjoyable for what it is.

The TV series gets right into it; the murder of a popular girl of the high school happens and immediately conjures up memories of something similar from 20 years previous. To uncover this super sleuths at the Lakewood Police Department are on the case. No matter what the police work that happens is downright laughable throughout the entire series. I spent more time laughing at the characters than feeling sympathy for them or their cause. Let me try and describe a scene that actually unfolds in this show. So the police believe they have their guy that has murdered the teens. They get a girl who was friends with the alleged murderer to arrange a meeting with him in a dark and dreary part of town. The police get a fellow young police women to pose as the girl to meet him in the area. All the while this is happening the police are watching to help out and arrest if need be. So what does the sheriff of the town do? He sits and waits in a bush. Yes he does, and boy did I get a chuckle watching a grown man sit and wait in a bush like he was playing night games waiting to get tagged with a flashlight. This is what the show does so flawlessly, the plot might be held together with weak Scotch Tape but boy does it have laugh out loud dumb moments throughout.

Scream truly is mindless entertainment. It is simple and easy fun because it is so horrible yet so great throughout. I can’t possibly say anything more about my guilty pleasure of a show. Scream‘s first season is now streaming on Netflix.

Final Score: Don’t hide in a bush and instead find this show to watch
