Review: Lemonade

lemonadeFrom the first line of Beyonce’s new album Lemonade, it’s easy to see this isn’t just another Queen Bey album. “You can taste the dishonesty it’s all over your breath.” The beginning of the album has a clear theme… infidelity. Rumors of Jay-Z’s unfaithfulness have been swirling around the media for years, and Beyonce uses this album as an outlet to turn these rumors to reality. She uses lyrics like “looking at my watch, he should have been home. Today I regret the night I put this ring on” and “Better call Becky with the good hair” to expose her husband’s betrayal. The album transitions from hate to forgiveness when the ‘Sandcastles’ video plays, showing her and Jay-Z in love once again. The album also expresses the love that black women have to deal with and overcome. During the HBO visual special, she plays a Malcolm X quote saying “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman.” Aside from the love troubles expressed in Lemonade, the album also explores an evident theme of race in America. The album also features The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Jack White, James Blake, and the videos offer a cameo from the mothers of Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, and Eric Garner who all fell victim to the police brutality epidemic in America. Lemonade is on the fast track to being one of the biggest albums of 2016, with projected first week sales of 500-600k.
