Coming into this game Mayo was 4-0 just like their opponents Mankato West. The only difference was Mankato being ranked #3 in the 1AAAAA rankings and Mayo coming into the game as the underdog, unranked. However this didn’t phase the Spartans one bit as they were filled with the energy of this being the Homecoming game. They had a chance to prove themselves against one of the best teams in the state of Minnesota.

Starting out the game West shut down the Spartan offense two drives in a row and forced punts right away. Mayo’s defense did the same thing and held their own until 4th down of West’s second drive, where they took a direct snap and ran it 40 yards in for a touchdown. Up until halftime Mayo held West to only one more touchdown, to be down only 14-0 at the break.

After halftime West opened up their offense and never looked back, driving their score up to a whopping 34 points. Mayo’s offense struggled all night against. the powerful West defense only collecting 190 yards of total offense. The Spartan’s did score on their final drive of the game with Speedy Lozoya running the ball in for the score to make the final score of the game 34-7.
